Kisaragi no Hogyoku full English version hits iTunes store

As of December 5, 2011, the full English version of the Japanese VN for iPhone “Kisaragi no Hogyoku” has hit the iTunes store.

We previously reported that the indie visual novel writer Waitingforyouguys had created an original visual novel for the iPhone in Japanese, and had also released a “lite” demo version in English. That English version had been translated from Japanese by the original author, and although the translation was decent it did exhibit some issues. Despite those issues, the Lite version of the app is currently averaging 4.5 stars with 97 ratings.

Since the time of the original article, the entire script has been re-translated from scratch by Akira, a translator with some experience translating visual novels. This has resulted in a significant improvement of the translation quality. The full version in English is now available for purchase in the iTunes app store for $1.99. The free Lite version has also been updated to version 2.0 with the revised script.

Depending on reading speed, the total play time for the full version is somewhere between 1 and 3 hours. The app store’s story description, reflecting the new translation, is as follows:

Toru Fujiwara, who transferred to Sangu high school met a beautiful girl named Yuri on the first day.
At the same time, a new girl named Rita came from Scotland with a secret goal in her mind.
Toru enjoys his school life with Yuri and Rita.
But he is getting involved in battle for Kisaragi-no-Hogyoku (Gemma Februarii).

[update 12/10] In celebration of the release, the full version is free on the iTunes store until December 15, 2011.

New collaboration site and Kisaragi no Hogyoku translation announced

In response to the ongoing cease and desist orders issued from copyright holders with regards to visual novel translations as well as some of the reactions from the fan translation community, a new project collaboration site by the name of Proper-permission has been set up. This Redmine instance is aimed at hosting translation related projects for which project members have obtained permission from the copyright holders of the original works. In a post by creator Agilis of the site, the first project to be hosted on this site would be a collaborative translation of Waitingforyouguys’s Kisaragi no Hogyoku, an iPhone adaptation of a web novel. An English translation of the trial version is currently available from the original creators.

Indie Japanese novel game maker ventures into English translation

A person going by the handle Waitingforyouguys sent us email and informed us that he had created an English translation of the trial version of Kisaragi-no-Hogyoku, a short novel game he wrote for the iPhone. This game was adapted from a novel published on the creator’s site. The game does not use character sprites, but rather black and white full-screen images with text on the bottom half of the screen. The story revolves around the formation of “Ren” pairs between students at school and the competition for the top “Ren” pair. The translation is decent, although there are a few typos. Furthermore, the creator is seeking people who know both Japanese and English to help with the translation of the full game.
