The translation group working on Key’s all-ages game Little Busters! has announced that they have completed a translation patch (denoted version 6.0) for the entirety of the game. Furthermore, translation patches are available for the Ecstasy (18+ conversion with added content and new routes) and Memorial Edition (conversion from Ecstasy back to all-ages) versions of the game, although they are simply to translate the sections in those versions which correspond to the original version of the game; in that regard, some aspects in those versions are somewhat broken. The current major issue with this patch is the lack of word-wrapping, which the team hopes to fix in the future. They are also planning on translating the extra content in the Ecstasy and Memorial Edition versions once the translation team gets a rest.

A partial patch for Key’s Little Busters! is now available for download. This patch covers a good chunk of the common route as well as the “Rin 1″ route, which supposedly puts it at a little over the halfway mark. This patch was created to work with the original release of Little Busters!, and not the later Ecstasy version or the version that came with the 10th Memorial Box. More information can be found on its TLWiki project page, which includes a link for posting bug reports.

Visual Art’s versus English: Round 1

According to a post on the visualstyle Editor’s Diary, there has been talk of releasing a version of Itaru Hinoue’s (illustrator for Key’s Kanon, AIR, CLANNAD, Little Busters! and Rewrite) artbook overseas, which requires an English translation of the text in the artbook. visualstyle is a free monthly magazine released in both print and electronic form that features interviews and coverage of games released by Visual Art’s.

The following is a translation fo the diary entry in question:

This is my second post of the day. If I miss the June 26th deadline for the next issue of visualstyle, please blame it on this. (laugh)

Currently, there’s talk of releasing a version of Itaru Hinoue’s artbook overseas. Unfortunately, there are no plans to release that version domestically. We’d need to attach English explanations for this artbook, but the English translation process has been a painful uphill battle.

Recently, the lyrics “Okinawa~ Okinawa~” and thoughts of Miyakojima have been circling around in my head, making it quite difficult to work on English. If I don’t revive my English brain quickly enough, I’m going to collapse from my brain overheating.

By the way, if we just stick a sample line into a machine translator…
“この画集の表紙用に描き下ろされたイラストです” [This is an illustration drawn specifically for the cover of this art collection.]
becomes
“It is an illustration that drew for the cover of this picture collection and was lowered.”

It feels like I’m on a 100-game losing streak here…
Of course, if the artbook were just translated like that, I know we’d end up with some bizarre creation. And this is why I’m translating directly, even while my brain is overheating. The result is totally like a typical unpolished English translation produced by a Japanese person… (cry)

UPDATE: A recent post on June 5 indicates that they have currently received at least 500 orders for the artbook. There was no indication in the post of where the orders were coming from.

Tidbit: Little Busters teaser patch from fluffy

Fluffed Cat Fight Campus!

A nameless fluffy group has released an English translation of the official trial version of Little Busters!, containing approximately ten minutes of the game and the opening animation. As the group has only a few translators available, it is expected that the entire game will take a number of years to complete. However, the group does plan to keep working on the game until it is finished. They have also moved their irc channel to #fluffy on irc.synirc.net, so anyone interested in helping out is encouraged to go there.

Little Group on Little Busters!

There is a group tackling the translation of Key’s latest game, Little Busters! According to their latest update, they have figured out how to extract the majority of the text from the game and have managed to reinsert some back in.

Little Busters! was an all-ages game released by Key in 2007 and features a colorful cast of characters ranging from the cat-magnet Rin to the muscular idiot Masato. This is a story about the protagonist, Riki and his friends, Kyousuke, Kyousuke’s sister Rin, Masato and Kengo, who were part of this little justice gang called Little Busters back when they were little. It starts with the senior, Kyousuke, who had just returned from job hunting. Riki proposed that they should do something just like old times, and Kyousuke proclaimed that they would form a baseball team and the game tells of the exploits of Riki as they gather the team and how it went.

An adult version of the game, called Little Busters! EX(Ecstasy) is scheduled for release on July 25, 2008, but the translation group is mostly focused on getting it to work with the original all-ages release and they might work on EX after that.

Anyone interested in visiting the translation group is encouraged to join the channel #lbtp on irc.synirc.net and they are welcoming any help in translation that they can get.
