In an odd turn of events, a forum member on the gemot has posted an email that he supposedly received from Kiyobee, a person working at TYPE-MOON, in response to a technical question about translating Fate/stay night into Polish. The email was not an official response on behalf of the company, but rather included Kiyobee’s personal thoughts. Judging from the contents of the email, it looks like he personally is glad about spreading Fate/stay night to many people, although this cannot be construed as an official stance on behalf of TYPE-MOON.

The email contained both a machine-translated English version as well as the original Japanese version. The Japanese text in the email is as follows:

The following is an English translation, with comments by the translator in brackets:

Hello, I’m kiyobee, from TYPE-MOON.
I am sorry for the late response.

First, please be aware that this is entirely my own personal reply, and not an official response [on behalf of TYPE-MOON].

Thank you for enjoying our game.
I’m very grateful that you are trying to spread this game to lots of people for us.

I’d like to be able to help you with your problems if I can.

Fate stay/night’s script is written in a Japanese text encoding called ShiftJIS. Japanese and English are the only fully supported languages that will display properly in ShiftJIS, and Polish, the language you have been trying to get working, is not supported. Because of this, I’d imagine that problems can occur with Polish.

kirikiri [the Engine used in Fate/stay night] also supports Unicode, so perhaps you can first convert the entire script to Unicode and then change the text. Please give that a shot.

My English reading skills are not very good, so I apologize if I did not fully understand the problem.

I wish you the best of luck in your project.

Kiyobee (清兵衛) worked on the programming aspects of Fate/stay night and frequents the TYPE-MOON support BBS, helping users with technical issues such as games crashing.

After three years of hard work, today mirror moon releases their full translation of Fate/stay night, the largest game ever to have been translated to English by fans. The release can patch an existing installation of Fate/stay night (either Japanese or English) or install a new one, supports both the CD and DVD versions of the game and includes an optional voice patch, used to add the Realta Nua PS2 voice acting to all spoken dialogue in the game. Fate/stay night English is released for Windows only and works on both Japanese and non-Japanese locales.

Fate/stay night is one of the most famous visual novels of the decade, telling the story of the Holy Grail War, a fierce battle between seven magi and the Servants they control. It was released by TYPE-MOON on January 30, 2004, was sequeled by Fate/hollow ataraxia late 2005 and got an anime adaptation by Studio DEEN and Geneon in 2006. The game was later ported to the PS2 as Realta Nua. The Fate universe has seen several expansions in forms of novels, manga and fighting games.

mirror moon translator TakaJun started working on the script and images of Fate/stay night late 2005, working silently for a few months to see if translating the game would be feasible. At April Fools’ 2006 the project was officially announced, the joke being that it was actually true. It then took over a year until the Fate route patch could be released, translating the first of the game’s three routes to English. Two years after the official announcement the second version was released, adding the second route Unlimited Blade Works. Now, after a total of three years of work, all three routes are translated with the release of Heavens Feel.

Edit: Due to a nasty bug a new version was released (v3.1), but for the voiced version of v3.1 another small fix is required. See the official post for details.

Editing of this third route is currently estimated to be at 40%. Barring any grand paloomba mistaeks of doom, that figure should only be going up from here on.

mirror moon has released their translation for the PC editions of the second route of Fate/stay night, Unlimited Blade Works. Additionally, they have provided the option to extract voices from the disc for the PlayStation 2 version, Fate/stay night Realta Nua, as well as removed the Japanese locale requirement to run the game.

This release comes after a flood of drama concerning the long period since the last release in May of 2007. However, amongst concerns that the release of the final route, Heaven’s Feel, if not this patch itself would be canceled or delayed further, mirror moon has gone on to publish it.

This translation, as with other mirror moon translations, have bug report forum threads (details at mirror moon’s website). The following downloads are available:

Progress has been continuing at a steady pace since mirror moon announced their work on Fate/stay night eight months ago. TakaJun finished the translation of the Fate route in June of this year and tjm is now close to completing the editing of those scripts, finishing approximately 30% of the game. With puKKa nearly finished with the image editing as well, the staff is beginning to plan for an internal beta test. It has not yet been decided whether or not the Fate route will be released as a separate patch.

Meanwhile ArchDemon and Ryuusoul are working through the Melty Blood and Melty Blood: ReAct story mode scripts, refining the translations and inserting them into the game. Approximately 40% of the script is finalized, some programming work still remains and image editing is also not yet completed.

Ryuusoul has finished editing Tsukihime’s Akiha route, with the current progress at 80% it is expected that beta 2 can begin some time this month. A number of days ago Mirror Moon put up a smalll Fate/stay night project page, listing TakaJun for translation and tjm for editing and hacking. Since then puKKa has joined to help with image editing. TakaJun has finished translating up to day 6 of the Fate scenario and is continuing at high pace. To save him from madness over Shirou’s annoying selfishness, non-blood related imouto are welcome to report at his doorstep for further instructions.

Easter Egg Update: The editing of Tsukihime is almost done and TakaJun is currently translating day 8 of Fate/stay night.
