Chunsoft announces US sound novel release

Yesterday, at casual game developer conference casual connect, video game developer and publisher Chunsoft (now known as Spike-Chunsoft after the merger in April), along with Agetec (their North American publishing partner), presented a lecture titled “Immersive Narrative Gameplay Experiences and Why the SoundNovel Series Works” in the “Indie Developers, Game Design and Storytelling” session. Chunsoft was the first to bring out “sound novel” games, which formed the basis of visual novel-style games today. The Night of Kamaitachi(かまいたちの夜 in Japanese), the second title released by Chunsoft in Japan for its SoundNovel series of games, is now being billed as their “first US Sound Novel release,” with potentially other games in the series to follow on both iOS and Android. From the description of the lecture, it appears that Chunsoft and Agetec are aiming this at the e-book audience.

Thanks to Daichi for the news tip.

UPDATE: A video of the talk has been uploaded by Casual Connect onto YouTube. Thanks to NM64 for the tip.

Finally! Someone got smart with the idea to market them as a media-rich ebook than as a plot-heavy, gameplay-lacking game! I know I’m not the only one that saw VNs this way, so why it took them so long has me baffled.

I just realized, Chunsoft are the guys that did 999 on the DS. In a Nintendo Power article from a year ago (volume 267), the script writer distinctly stated how VNs should be compared to actual books rather than video games. It would seem that this is the enactment of that idea.

Finally targeting the right audience I see. Too bad I have just a crappy, old phone.

You could run an android emulator for your PC, buy the game and run it on that if you’re desperate to play. That’s likely what I’ll. Hell, I might buy more than one copy since I really want Machi (and 428) to be translated.

Didn’t know there were phone OS emulators around. I never bothered searching. I guess that’s an option.

Heck you can run Android natively on a PC via Android-x86. Be warned though – having a touchscreen is HIGHLY recommended! (the OS ran extremely well on my netbook, but with only a mouse the navigation was very bad)
