Yes, JAST can!

JAST USA has announced that they plan on releasing ALcot’s My Girlfriend is the President in 2011. The official website for this release is currently reachable, but is not fully operational yet. This game initially attracted the attention of a lot of Western fans with a trailer movie featuring an English narration. A fan translation project for this game was started on TLWiki back in late 2009 around the time of the release of the full game and had been mostly done around mid September. According the most recent post on the project page, it appears that JAST USA will be using this project’s work in the official release. When asked for comments, JAST USA employee Shingo has stated that they will be working with the fan translation project members to incorporate the translation into the official release.

Awesome news. It only makes sense this should be localized if the female lead becomes the president :). The narrator at the end of the vid said it would release “all over the universe,” so he’s just keeping his promise :P.

While this is great news, I have to admit that I’m kind of torn about this announcement — the reason for that being I just imported the original Japanese version of the game. This would be the second time I’ve bought a nearly-ready-for-English-release visual novel only to have the title officially licensed and the fan translation subsequently dropped (the first being Shuffle). If I’d known about this development beforehand, I’d have bought The Devil on G-String or Muv-Luv instead and save any price difference for the NA release… It didn’t help that J-List promoted the import version by underscoring that the fan translation was almost done…

Oh well. At least I got the limited edition, as opposed to the Shuffle -Standard Edition- I blew $88.00 on before. It’s still sealed, too, if anyone wants to take it off my hands.

Hooray! That was partly sarcastic and sincere… Sarcastic because I still kept on waiting for Demonbane and Tenkuu no Yumina (BTW is the latter VN I just mentioned really true? Is it really officially licensed??) Sincere because I think JAST USA can finally show their worth, that they can license big-time (fan-base wise and storywise) VNs, because I really think they keep on licensing crap… XD

  11. Doku Says:
    December 28th, 2010 at 9:12 am

Fuck. I was expecting this to get released within the next couple of months, and now all of a sudden it’s “hello 2015.”
Theoretically, it should be IMPOSSIBLE for JAST to fuck this up, because any dumbass can re-insert kirikiri scripts (so they can’t have problems with the engine like they have been having with Demonbane), and the translation+editing are both already like 95% finished…
JAST doesn’t have my good faith at the moment, although perhaps with this they can demonstrate a little competence.

Regardless of the outcome, I suppose we can take solace in the fact that it actually isn’t a very good game in the first place… It’s sad to have it slip out of our grasp at the last moment, though.

If they haven’t told the tl-wiki team about this quite some time before this announcement… or if they won’t use their tl… then this is one of the worst moves of JAST.
Sure, it’s their right to do something like that, but still.

So here I am, hoping they REALLY are working with the tl-wiki project since quite some time already.

No, no, the TLwiki guys were very much involved with this. When JAST suddenly picks up a TLwiki translation, the people who worked on it get PAID. Not very much, but it’s not like it gets stolen from them.
That’s right, JAST has essentially BOUGHT the Osadai translation. Now, honestly, if they can get it out quickly enough, that’s really not so bad. The translators deserve to get something for their work, and even though JAST won’t give them much, at least they get more than they would if they released the TL for free. If JAST localizes the game, it also means that ALcot gets a little money too, which is something of a benefit for all of us (because it means that Japanese companies will feel a little better about Westerners playing their games).

Worse things could’ve happened, and if JAST doesn’t fuck this up, this is actually GOOD outcome.

  14. Cicero Says:
    December 28th, 2010 at 12:55 pm

The TL wiki translation seemed like it was in the home stretch. In fact, a few months ago a fully translated but buggy and unedited patch was leaked. It’s still out there if you know where to look.

I’m not too sure I’m entirely thrilled by this. Nothing against official localizations but it seemed that the TL wiki crew was close to getting this done and released, now I’m somewhat concerned that a release could take years. And of course we are still waiting on Demonbane.

For those who bought the game already from j-list in anticipation of the fan patch… (TDOMMX!) Check this out : http://bit.ly/f0xVXH

Shingo : “I’m going to check and see if there’s something we can do for J-List customers who bought the Japanese version of the game anticipating a fan release of the translation, that seems fair.

Edit: also, we’ve reviewed the game content and we haven’t seen any red flags that would indicate the need for alterations in the localization process. We’ll keep you informed.

Edit 2: I’ve just confirmed that we’ll be providing a download copy of the English release to customers who’ve purchased the Japanese version from J-List. This will be retroactive and will apply to anyone purchasing the Japanese version from now on as well.”

    That’s pretty nice methinks.

X-Calibar: That’s good to hear, but I doubt I’d be able to benefit from this offer since I think I ordered my copy from PaletWeb (I placed two orders, one from J-List and one from PaletWeb, at around the same time and I forget exactly what I bought from where…).

Still, it’s nice to see that they’re making amends with the ones that could justifiably make a case against the way J-List marketed the import version. I’d rather see them offer a discount towards the purchase price of the English version instead of a free copy of the game – that way, those that simply cannot use digital downloads aren’t shafted and only need to cover the cost of shipping. Still, this is a good start.

If only they could keep the mosaic-ed CG.. I don’t want anymore crappy uncensoring like what was made on shuffle…
Also, is there any way to get the free/discount price if bought the game in a actual IRL store in japan ?

  23. boingman Says:
    December 30th, 2010 at 9:13 am

What is wrong with the Shuffle uncensoring? I didn’t play it yet, but was thinking about ordering it.

  24. Vodka Says:
    December 30th, 2010 at 12:05 pm

There was no bad uncensoring in Shuffle. Rather, when the HCGs were originally drawn the artist never imagined that anybody would get to see those pictures uncensored and drew the parts-to-be censored kinda lazily. Since seriously, who would ever know?

Thus orignal uncensored HCGs in MG’s release look kinda weird.

Oh for the love of… Everything disappears into the void called JAST USA, where the fuck is Dra+Koi? I’ve seen one-man teams in Ukraine work faster mining diamonds for crying out loud…

for Demonbane, blame Nitroplus, not JAST; everything except the engine was ready for release months ago
and Dra+Koi has nothing to do with them – if you’re referring to the claim of 97% translated on the old TLWiki page, I’m pretty sure it went unreleased not because the JAST deal put a stop to it, but because the translator decided he hadn’t done the game justice and scrapped the project

  30. Rem Says:
    January 2nd, 2011 at 2:54 am

    >>29

Wasn’t the Demonbane project on 50% 1,5 year ago on TLwiki? But since JAST began with their deal, every N+ game translation came to a halt to promote their ‘alliance’. An alliance which hasn’t gone anywhere in 1,5 years. Dra+Koi on 97% was in the image editing state I believe, and why would a person scrap work based on not doing the game justice, isn’t that what editing is suppose to do, polish the game and make it presentable. And what little I’ve read from the few translated scripts, it wasn’t that bad, nowhere near how bad a commercial company like Mangagamer translated their first games.

It feels like stalling to gain enough pre-orders. Fixing a games engine isn’t rocket science, it’s freaking 2011 already.

  31. Vodka Says:
    January 2nd, 2011 at 10:05 am

    >>30
“Every N+ game translation came to a halt”
Really now? Did you miss Hanachirasu and Kikokugai releases, the progress Makoto has made on Muramasa and continuing work on Sumaga? And if you had read JAST’s Demonbane updates, you’d know that translation for all of that has been done for long. And it seems that engine problems that were the last hold-up have been handled now.
If Gekkou no Carnevale is bothering you, that was dead long before the announcement was made.
As for DraKoi, if you’re going to be upset to somebody, make it people working on it, not company that’s not even interested in damn thing.

  32. Anonymous Says:
    January 2nd, 2011 at 2:47 pm

    >>30
It’s stupid that Demonbane hasn’t been released. It’s quite possible that someone is stalling to gain enough pre-orders. I’m just asking you to blame the right people; the original developers that JAST is contractually obligated to rely on for engine support and to put final approval the translated scripts as well. Maybe they could do more to put pressure on Nitroplus, but they frankly have very little leverage.

In fact, I’d think JAST is aggressively pursuing other licenses as a means to later tell Nitroplus “look, we got this Alcot game out in just a few months and it’s making money, stop stalling your own releases and destroying your overseas fans’ goodwill” and embarrassing them into fulfilling their end of the contract if they haven’t by then.

  33. balls Says:

Nice to hear. Good news for everyone involved. I can’t help but wonder if ASCOT even knew about the fan TL seeing as TLWiki blocked foreign IP’s during the C&D fiasco… then again, the Osadai project started before the C&D’s.

Attempt doing some surveys online. You do not help to make all the funds while you would likely with a few other online work. These kinds of surveys tend not to take very long, and they usually just ask for your current view. In the event you join a legitimate review internet site, these dollars can easily equal to additional funds.
