New collaboration site and Kisaragi no Hogyoku translation announced

In response to the ongoing cease and desist orders issued from copyright holders with regards to visual novel translations as well as some of the reactions from the fan translation community, a new project collaboration site by the name of Proper-permission has been set up. This Redmine instance is aimed at hosting translation related projects for which project members have obtained permission from the copyright holders of the original works. In a post by creator Agilis of the site, the first project to be hosted on this site would be a collaborative translation of Waitingforyouguys’s Kisaragi no Hogyoku, an iPhone adaptation of a web novel. An English translation of the trial version is currently available from the original creators.

I’ll be honest the name could use some improvement. The idea is sound, but I can’t help but feel this is just a dig directed at the TLWiki.

Agilis has always been over vocal on anything he disagrees with (ie. fan translation without consultation with the original authors), if this is’nt just an e-peen exercise it has my support; but I have my doubts.

I don’t know man. there’s always a pro’s and con’s to every “objective”. I don’t see the con in this idea yet, but soon enough it will show up itself.

It isn’t an e-peen excercise, to be honest.

But really now. One little blog that no one reads isn’t overly vocal, it’s barely vocal. How could you accuse Agilis of being vocal when there’s only a barely-read blog? :3c

This seems similar to the C&D wiki in the way that it seems like its trying to make a point/send a message, but in reality, it just fails.

    some cons for you:
    1) most translators, particularly competent ones, don’t want to translate games they aren’t interested in
    2) the amount of freeware games that are interesting to anybody can be counted on the fingers of one hand – and good luck getting ‘proper permission’ for anything not freeware
    3) too many cooks spoil the broth, and when it comes to translators, two is too many: remember when mirror moon had to throw out and redo the tsukihime translation from scratch?
    4) if that screenshot on siliconera is from the trial, rather than proper permission they need an editor who knows proper grammar

i think the ‘proper permission’ idea is laudable (if doomed to failure by the poor quality of freeware games), but collaborative translation is a really bad idea. too many self-styled translators are terrible at one language or both, and even multiple decent ones will give rise to major consistency issues.

Is the Encubed site dead or is hentai news simply slow?
