An English version of the first two arcs of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni has just been released by SEAMS on the iTunes App Store and runs on the iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad. The first arc is free to download and the second arc is priced at $3.99. Both apps are classified as “Books” on the iTunes App Store. These apps are ports of the MangaGamer releases of the games and the idea to port the game to iPhone was initiated by HOBIBOX, who handled the licensing aspects of Higurashi for MangaGamer and also publishes cell-phone ports of games in Japan. The Japanese version of Higurashi has been available as an iPhone App of the first arc that is free to download, but arcs after the first one are in-app downloads at 600 yen each.

UPDATE: The current pricing for the first two arcs appears to be promotional pricing until August 15.

Hmmm, no android? I would think that would seem more appropriate for VNs due to its larger tech-savvy crowd and plain old “geek cred”.

4$/ chapter? Awesome. I’ll be buying whenever the next chapters arrive.
I hope more of these English VN ports is coming, I’m too lazy to read VNs on my computer.

On the contrary, I think this is a good way forward, since it looks like they might attract an audience who has probably never heard of VNs before; it’s listed under “Book” too. I think MangaGamer’s biggest issue has been that their potential customer base has been too small. Expanding it beyond the stereotypical fan base will do good in the long run, I believe. Now, if only they can crank up the marketing Engine on these “books”…

Lastly, assuming Apple lets you play ball on their court, I think the App Store is more likely to bring stable revenue, due to the type of people who would buy Apple products.

I’ve already installed the (free) first chapter on my old gen 1 iPod touch, and this does indeed seem like a decent enough implementation.
I hope a lot of people try this, with it being free, after all, and that this can give mangagamer some more exposure and some more business.

Just a quick note, the free/$3.99 price is a sale till the 15th, so better get them soon before the price goes up.

OK, that does make sense. However, I wouldn’t bet on ONLY the “Apple ecosystem”, especially if those Android-Windows comparisons come to fruitation.

You need to have whatever the minimum firmware the game specifies is. I looked at the Info.plist for Higurashi chapter 1, and it says it requires iOS 3.0.

You can definitely install OS 3.0 or higher on a gen 1 ipod touch, but I don’t think OS 4.0 supports the gen 1 models…
