JAST USA announced at their Anime Expo 2010 Thursday night panel that they have acquired the rights to publish an English localization of WILL subbrand ETERNAL’s Tenkuu no Yumina. Furthermore, they state that work is pretty much done on Demonbane and they expect it to be out by the end of the summer.

JAST USA started the panel with a recap of what they have been working on in the past year and their releases up to and including Moero Downhill Night 2 and Lightning Warrior Raidy 2, which they have been selling at their booth in the exhibition hall. They then moved on to discussing their progress on Demonbane, stating that they expect the game to be out “Summer 2010.” Apparently, Nitro+ insisted on developing their own engine for the localization and has also been very careful in making sure the translation turns out correct. When asked about possible changes to the game a la what happened to Family Project, Peter says that the number of changes have been “zero”. After talking with JAST USA after the con, we’ve learned that production on Demonbane is pretty much done, but there are a few logistical issues that needs to be handled.

After discussing Demonbane, the panel moved on to talking about their newly acquired title, Tenkuu no Yumina, otherwise known as Yumina the Ethereal or Yumina the Eternal. From the presentation, the game appears to be an epic RPG with a Super Robot Wars-style battle system.

Kikouyoku Senki Tenkuu no Yumina was ETERNAL(a subbrand of eroge company WILL)’s first game, published in early 2009. It features an RPG battle system and the plot spans two major arcs — school and space. The first arc’s opening movie has “Yumina the Eternal” and the second arc’s opening has “Yumina the Ethereal” as the English subtitle. The game also features three difficulty levels. The story starts with the protagonist transfering to a school to protect one of the heroines of the game, Yumina and eventually ends up in an epic adventure in outer space.

Lastly, JAST USA has indicated that they have also been approaching several other game companies as well.

specific information about the arcs would spoil the experience a little.

Ahhh! First Shirotsume Souwa now Tenkuu no Yumina have been picked up, and Rewrite has had some of the trial translated. Everything I put on my VNDB wishlist is getting translated! This is scary…

after all of this waiting…. they get 1 title? that is 1 extra title since last year? So in 2011 JAST will release 1 title?

any way, the good news is “Lastly, JAST USA has indicated that they have also been approaching several other game companies as well.” This is a good change, they used to be told to “we are not interested” but now they are being approached, hopefully this will mean some more titles for 2011.

I think JAST has a panel at another con later this year, so there might be more later. Don’t forget that Yumina is a LOOOONG title, and was likely expensive to license.

JAST isn’t being approached, they are approaching others. And they’re still being told to piss off. That sentence was based on the following quote from the panel:

23:03:00 The question was… as one of the few companies that translates the game, you must have a large number of games to translate, how do you pick the ones you do
23:03:10 The answer to that is that the field that you have to choose from is actually limited.
23:03:16 The first is Japanese companies that are willing to even go international
23:03:25 We’ve talked to some of the really big makers…
23:03:35 And they said they aren’t interested in going international.
23:03:45 There has been some press that has made some japanese makers gunshy about coming out side japan
23:04:15 What it comes down to… i’ve dealt with the president of these companies, and it boils down that certain aspects of the personalities… do they want to see people around the world playing their game… and then there is what might the downside be
23:04:27 If there is any potential problem, they will study it for 3-4 years and by then everytrhitng changes
23:04:39 so any specific company, being able to work with them, it could be quite tricky
23:04:46 It could be kinda hit or miss.

It’s basically a complicated way of saying, ‘we tried to get more licenses but couldn’t come to an agreement’.

They have to consider profitability too. Eroge fandom has changed (fan translations, MangaGamer, prevalence of broadband Internet, more crossover with hardcore anime fans), and I doubt they’re seeing the numbers they saw six or seven years ago.

JAST USA will have to be a lot more careful in terms of the quality (the elaborate titles also tend to be longer and riskier) and quantity of titles they release. Much of what we saw a few years back doesn’t cut it anymore.

Hmm. I do not know, I have mixed feelings about this. I’ve played Tenkuu no Yumina when it was released in Japan, and I feel like a father agreeing to let her daughter marry a guy. I mean, It’s good, so that more people can play this epic game, but I feel sad, cuz when more and more people play this, I can’t brag about them that I played such an epic game like this.

Overall, I’m still thinking if I should purchase a copy of this.
